Coconut crab (Birgus Latro) which is also the largest living arthropod in the world and also is known by the name of robber crab or sometimes by palm thief as these coconut crab are believed to steal shiny items like pots, silverware from houses. Coconut crab inhabits in the coastal forest regions of indo pacific island. They hid themselves during day and only comes out during the night .The core skill they these coconut crab posses is the ability to climb the tress and crack down coconuts with their strong mighty claws.
These coconut crab climbs the coconut palms, clips of the nuts and climb down to the ground and hammer open the nut and it carries the husked nut back up the palm and drops it heavily and repeatedly on the rocks until it breaks.
The male coconut crabs are generally bigger than female one and they can live more than 30 years. Evidence shows that these coconut crabs measure up to six feet and weighing 14 kg(30 pounds).
Coconut crab feeds on Fleshy fruits, Nuts, seeds and also consumes organic materials like tortoise hatchlings and even dead animals too. They also hunt and eat Polynesian Rat. They often steal food from each other and pull their food into their burrows to keep themselves safe while eating.
Coconut crab is also being sold as pet especially in city like Tokyo. These coconut crab are being eaten by pacific islanders and southeast asians.However Due to excessive hunting of this poor and innocent creature has led to extinction is some areas. However I don’t suggest any kind of hunting or eating of any animals or living species.
Coconut crabs are worldwide protected species according to IUCN Invertebrate red data book and it is also put on the list of endangered species.
